Submarine Department of the IMM Hamburg
« on: 19 Feb , 2017, 04:38 »
Hi Gents,

I have visited the "International Maritime Museum Hamburg" a few weeks ago (http://www.imm-hamburg.de).

A visit which I wanted to do for years. The museum has more than 4 floors in a very large building (a former storehouse). The exhibition shows IMO every aspect of seafaring. It takes me more than six hours for an inspection but I suppose I will need a second visitation because the rooms are crammed (meant as a compliment) with very interesting exhibits from around the world. So if you stay in Hamburg I highly recommend this museum for a visit.

I took a lot of pictures specially in the Navy Department and – as you will have gathered – with focus on submarines and uboats. So lets start with this picture thread sorted a little bit by different time and technical periods.

"Overview.jpg" shows the wall with submarine and uboat models (mostly 1/100 Scale). The pictures named "AA-gun" (2 cm/twin) and "Uboat_net" are self explaining.

Pre wartime (WW1) uboats and submarines

French submarine "Gustav Zede" (commissioning 1893). I like the design it looks very modern to me with a touch of Jules Verne.

"U1"is  Germanys first submarine (commissioning 1906). IMO "U1" looks like a mixture of a torpedo- and uboat. The original "U1" is exhibited in Munich today as a cutaway (scale 1:1 of course). YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ1aZT4HsUg

WW1 Uboats
"U9" German Uboat, commander Otto Weddigen. In September 1914 "U9" sunk three british warships within 75 minutes.

WW2
U-boat diorama 1/35 scale. I'am not sure but I assume this diorama was listed on ebay a few years ago and it was sold at the end of the auction for more than 10,000.00 EUR (ten thousand).

WW2 – Typ XXI
Scale 1/100, the deck of this model is very well done. IMO it's high time that Revell do this one in 1/72 scale.

WW2 – Typ XXI (cutaway model)
Part 1
I don't remember the scale of this one exactly, but I suppose 1/50 here.

Thanks for the great images.
Seems like a very interesting museum. I'll keep that in mind for when I find myself near Hamburg.
